Everyone has their own personalized sense of humor, so jump start your comedy career with these 4 easy steps...
1. DO WHAT YOU KNOW
To develop your material, address what’s important and relevant to your life. The more familiar you are with your subject matter, the easier it will be to evoke an emotional response from audiences. For example, if you’re an athlete, try catering your jokes to sports.
2. WRITE YOUR JOKES
Record whatever jokes are running through your head by setting all your thoughts to paper. After filtering out the duds, arrange the jokes into a sensible sequence. Think of your routine as one separated into blocks of similar information. Once you see a pattern, fill up or cut down the material accordingly.
3. PRACTICE ON YOUR OWN AND WITH A GO-TO TEST AUDIENCE
While you practice, record yourself. Notice what you like and what you don’t like. Once you’re comfortable with your routine, gather a group of your friends and family together and use them as your go to test audience. After your routine is complete, ask for feedback and suggestions, as well as what kind of improvements can be made to better your performance.
4. PERFORM WITH CONDIFENCE
Once you’ve edited your material and performed several test runs, it’s time to get professional. Find your local comedy club, improve club, and/or open-mic night, sign yourself up, and get ready to rock the house! For your performance, get up there and have fun. Attitude is everything, so don’t let audiences detect your insecurities because they’ll reflect those feeling unto your routine. Instead, deliver your material with confidence! Aside from some harmless heckling and jeers, what’s the worst that could happen? Practice makes perfect, so don’t give up—toughen up!
Let laughter live!
